Arc'teryx Alternatives: Gorpcore Jackets That Cost Less

An Arc'teryx alternative is a jacket that delivers the parts of an Arc'teryx shell that matter to you, such as wind and rain protection, an adjustable hood and a clean cut, for less money or with a different look. Arc'teryx's Gore-Tex Beta Jacket lists at $400 and the Beta SL at $500. Credible waterproof shells from other brands start at about $100.

This guide compares the brands shoppers most often weigh against Arc'teryx, then explains what to check before you buy. A note on bias: AFTERSOIL sells the independent labels described near the end of this guide. It does not sell Arc'teryx or any other brand in the comparison table. Prices are list prices from the linked sources, checked in October 2026, and they change often.

Why Arc'teryx is the benchmark

Arc'teryx was founded in North Vancouver in 1989 as Rock Solid and renamed in 1991. Today it is owned by Amer Sports (Wikipedia). Wikipedia calls it "an influence" in the gorpcore movement, and it runs a city line, Veilance, founded in 2009. Its reputation rests on laminated, low-seam Gore-Tex shells such as the Alpha SV and Beta (Disco). Prices match the reputation: Feathered Friends lists the men's Beta Jacket at $400, and Switchback Travel lists the Beta SL at $500. Disco also notes that the brand cuts "trim and athletic", so broader builds often size up.

What to look for in any alternative

Fabric and membrane

Decide first whether you need waterproof or water-resistant. Switchback Travel explains that waterproof jackets use a laminate or coating plus taped seams. Water-resistant windbreakers and softshells handle light rain and breathe better. Gore-Tex is the best-known membrane, but brands also use their own, such as Patagonia's H2No, The North Face's DryVent and Columbia's Omni-Tech.

Construction

Look for the layer count. Switchback says 2-layer jackets suit casual use, 2.5-layer jackets are lighter and more packable, and 3-layer jackets are the most durable. A waterproof rating such as 10,000 mm is useful but incomplete: Switchback notes that seam taping matters as much as the number.

Fit

Japanese brands such as And Wander, Goldwin, Montbell and Uniqlo often run a size small for US shoppers, according to Disco's fit notes for And Wander, Goldwin, Montbell and Uniqlo. Most AFTERSOIL jackets are cut slightly oversized. Check the measurement chart on each product page rather than your usual size.

Weight and packability

If the jacket will live in a bag, check the weight and whether it packs down. The 2025 Montbell Versalite weighs 5.9 ounces, according to BetterTrail. Among AFTERSOIL's pieces, the ENSHADOWER Foldable Spliced UV Protection Jacket ($95) folds into a compact pouch built into its back. The CATSSTAC Spliced Laser-Perforated Waterproof UV Hooded Jacket ($99) is described by its label as lightweight and packable, with a ripstop shell.

Details

An adjustable hood, a hem drawcord, cuffs that close (Velcro or elastic) and zip pockets make more difference day to day than logos do.

Which one should you choose?

  • Heavy rain and hiking: a 3-layer shell such as the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L, or save up for an Arc'teryx Beta.
  • The lowest price for city drizzle: the Columbia Watertight II or The North Face Antora.
  • The quiet, city-ready look at full price: And Wander or Goldwin.
  • A design-led jacket under $200: start with AFTERSOIL's gorpcore jackets, keeping in mind that we sell them.

FAQ

What is a cheaper alternative to an Arc'teryx jacket?

For a waterproof shell, Switchback Travel calls the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L ($189) its best overall rain jacket and says it undercuts the competition "by hundreds". For a lower budget and city use, the Columbia Watertight II lists for $100 according to OutdoorGearLab. For a design-led look, most jackets from AFTERSOIL's independent labels cost under $200.

Are And Wander and Goldwin cheaper than Arc'teryx?

No. Disco puts both And Wander and Goldwin in the same top price tier as Arc'teryx. They are alternatives in style, with quieter city-ready cuts, but not in price.

Is a Teflon-coated windbreaker waterproof?

Not automatically. A coating makes fabric shed water, but a jacket only stays dry in long, heavy rain if the seams are taped and the zips are sealed as well. Read each listing: some say water-repellent or splash-proof, others say waterproof, and only a few mention taped seams.

How do AFTERSOIL's shipping and returns work?

Standard shipping is free on orders over $79 and $9 otherwise. Unworn items with tags attached can be returned or exchanged within 14 days of delivery, with no restocking fee. Full terms are on the shipping policy and return and exchange pages.
